Ukelele

About Music

Ukuleles are musical instruments belonging to the string family. Similar to guitars in shape and design, they are smaller and have four strings rather than six. Traditionally associated with Hawaii, where they were created, the popularity of the smooth, relaxing sound of the instrument is growing.

Types of Ukuleles

There are four types of ukulele: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. They range in size from the smallest, soprano at 21 inches, to the largest, baritone at 33 inches. In shape they are similar to guitars, having the same type of body. Ukuleles are tuned by pegs at the top of the neck, and have a hole in the body for the resonating sound to come out. There doesn't seem to be as much concern about the types of wood used to create the ukuleles as there is regarding guitars. Because the sound is meant to be mellow, volume and resonance are not as big an issue as they are with guitar players.
