Trumpet Music

The Music

Unlike other brass and woodwind instruments that depend on keys to change notes, trumpets depend on the shape of the lips and the pressure of the air. They require much practice to master. Depressing the valves in combinations can raise and lower the notes, but many notes are made solely by the mouth of the player.

Because of their strong, unique sound, trumpets are very popular in all types of music. They are frequently associated with the military, where they are used for their clear, loud sound. Classical music often calls for trumpets in solos or to blend into the background. Trumpets are also famously used in marching bands, mariachi, jazz, blues, funk, and even pop music for a unique sound. Some of the most famous singers and songwriters in the last century have been renowned trumpeters, including Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie. These musicians and many more recognized the simple, clear, brave sound of the trumpet. It is one of the most recognizable brass instruments, and lends itself well to any type of music.
