About Music

The Common Four

The most common saxophones in use today are the alto, the tenor, the soprano and the baritone. The alto sax is the most commonly used, as well as what is often considered the "beginner sax" because so many saxophonists start with the alto before branching out to the tenor or baritone. The alto is the most popular amongst classical saxophonists, and the soprano is considered the most difficult to play and keep in tune.

What About The Rest

The others, such as the sopranio and contrabass, are still manufactured today, but mostly for novelty or collectors. Some large saxophone ensembles make use of all members of the saxophone family.

Plays Well With Others

The saxophone is often associated with solo instrumentalists, but it works very well as part of an ensemble as well. Music written for the saxophone can be adapted to either form of performance. From its humble origins in military bands to its harmonious support of orchestra music to its rebellious, stand alone performance ability, the saxophone in its many varieties is a challenging and rewarding instrument to play.
