Pianos

About Music

Nearly every musician is familiar with the piano, following the traditional school of thought that, should a budding musician learn this instrument first, any subsequent instrument learned will be easier by comparison. These large, imposing, sit-down instruments are easily recognizable by their upright cases, stools for sitting, and their distinctive black and white keys.

The piano has been in existence since around 1700, and a few original models still exist today. A powerfully resonant instrument that has produced music from the great composers of history through to influencing the synthesizer technicians of the 21st century, the piano has forever made its presence known in the world of music.

What Is It?

The piano is a rather large musical instrument that produces sounds by striking strings stretched across a rigid frame, with hammers. The hammers are activated by a keyboard and are covered in felt or, in some cases, leather. They produce their distinctive sounds through the mechanical means that allow the hammers to strike and then spring away immediately, which allows the string to vibrate freely.
