Oboe Musical Instruments

About Music

The oboe is a double-reed instrument in the woodwind family. It is one of the more difficult woodwinds to master, and its unique sound is highly prized in symphonies.

The Instrument

The oboe is typically made of wood (granadilla being the most common, but also cocobolo, rosewood, and violet wood) or a high quality resin plastic. It is a long, narrow instrument that flares out slightly at the end. Most oboes are black because of the wood or plastic used. There are usually twenty silver-plated keys on an oboe.

A double-reed is inserted into the tip of the oboe. By blowing through this piece, the musician controls the volume and sound quality. Reeds need to be soaked before they soften, which makes them easier to vibrate. Additionally, reeds can split if not taken care of properly. Reeds also need to be replaced periodically due to normal wear.
