Music Therapy

About Music

For college students with a special aptitude for music, but no desire for the bright lights of a performance career, music therapy is a field that offers opportunities and rewards.

Purpose of Music Therapy

Music therapy uses all facets of music -- physical, emotional, social, aesthetic, and spiritual -- as a means of helping clients to improve or maintain their health. For some clients, music serves their needs directly through music. For others, the music is a conduit between client and therapist.

Clients range from those of all ages and conditions, including problems ranging from psychiatric disorders to all manner of medical problems and impairments. Developmental disabilities, substance abuse, communication disorders, and aging are some of the therapeutic uses of music therapy. Music therapy can also be used to improve learning, build self-esteem, reduce stress and facilitate a host of other health-related activities.
