What Mandolins Sound Like

What Do Mandolins Sound Like?

Because mandolins have four notes, they are usually tuned to G-D-A-E. This is the same tuning as a violin. Since the two instruments are tuned to the same notes, it is often easy for mandolin players to play violin music. While there is music written specifically for mandolins, being able to play violin music as well opens up a lot more possibilities. To achieve a lower or more mellow sound, mandolins can be tuned to different note combinations. However, most mandolins are not designed to maintain those notes that are too low.

Mandolins are picked or strummed like guitars. Many players use picks to aid with the sound. Because of this, the notes cannot be sustained like they are on a violin. Some players get around this by playing the two strings tuned to the same note alternately in fast succession, thus imitating the sound of a note being held out. This method is called tremolo, and is also used on the guitar.

Because of a rising awareness of the mandolin, it has seen greater use in all types of music. Classical music written for the mandolin is available. Additionally, mandolins are used in bluegrass, rock, country, Indian music, and many other music genres. Because the mandolin combines violin notes with guitar-like playing, it is highly adaptable to any type of music.
