Karaoke

About Music

Karaoke is a popular form of guest driven entertainment that originated in Japan. The name, "karaoke," is derived from the Japanese words "kara," which means empty, and "okesutora," meaning orchestra. Karaoke is essentially amateur singers who are singing along to popular songs in front of an audience. The vocals to the song are usually omitted or lowered to allow the voice of the participant to shine through. In most cases, there is a television monitor that displays words to the song; each word is highlighted at the precise moment, or beat, when it should be sung. The monitor also displays some type of video presentation along with lyrics.

The Popularity of Karaoke

This fun form of entertainment is popular for a number of reasons. First, it allows the singer to perform in any way they see fit. The singer may try diligently to sing on key or intentionally make mistakes that excite an audience reaction. Second, the songs that are provided include very well-known songs, making it easy for all guests to follow along. Finally, karaoke can create a unique bonding experience for guests. Although all guests are not required to participate, the party is usually more fun when more guests perform.
