String Materials

Strings can be nylon or metal. Why are string materials important to the musician? The alloy in metal strings can affect tone. The material used to wrap the strings on electric guitars needs to have a stronger magnetic property than the core in order to work with pick ups. For plain strings the most common metal used is Swedish steel; but what about acoustic guitars? No magnetic properties required, although a strong resonance is.

Sting Gauge

The thickness, or gauge, of the guitar string is also important. The amount of tension the string creates and how difficult it is to press is measured by the gauge in 1/1000ths of an inch. Heavier strings are harder to play but produce a stronger, fatter tone than the thinner varieties. As a general rule of thumb, remember that "the bigger the string, the bigger the sound."

Stringing Strings

The locking hold is considered the most secure method to keep the strings in place. By wrapping the string around the tuning peg, bring the excess string back around and under the string as it wraps around the peg. As for when to replace the strings (outside of when they snap) it often depends on how your music sounds. Many guitar players report they get more clear, fresh tones out of newer strings, so if you are starting to sound flat, consider changing your strings before you blame your amp or your audience.

When shopping for strings, understanding the sound they will produce, as well as how they will perform, is important. Experimentation is key when you are looking for a special sound, and playing around with different stringed guitars at the local instrument shop is one way to check out the differences.
