The Music

Different notes are achieved by opening and closing the holes or keys along the length of the flute. This shortens or lengthens the area in which the air vibrates, therefore changing the note produced. Different styles are available. Some have keys that are always open and must be closed off by the fingers. Student flutes typically have no open holes.

The sound is controlled by the way the air enters the embouchure hole. Angling it and changing the force will change the sound of the flute. Because of this, the flute is an incredibly expressive instrument. Greater control and manipulation of the sound is more possible for the flute than it is for other reed instruments.

For its soft, sweet sound, the flute is widely featured in classical music. Solo and accompaniment pieces are readily available, and most music can be transcribed for the flute. Flutes are tuned to C, and have a wide range of possible notes. They have a high pitch, but can be made to have lower sounds. The flute is a challenging but beautiful instrument -- not to mention a classic choice for accompaniment, orchestral, and solo pieces.
