Banjos

About Music

Banjos are instruments that belong to the string family. They have a rich musical history and a unique sound that makes them popular in many types of music, particularly bluegrass and old-time American. Additionally, there is a lot of music written specifically for the banjo.

The Instrument

Banjos typically come in four- or five- string varieties. The strings are metal or nylon, and attached at the top of the neck. They are tuned by pegs similar to those on the guitar. Five-string guitars have the fifth string located farther down the neck than the other four strings.

The body of the banjo can be made in a number of ways. Open-backed banjos are popular with the five-string design. Closed-back banjos are also available to take advantage of the resonance. Different materials are used to alter the sound or look of the banjo. Inlays into the neck and body of the banjo are used for decoration. Metal-bodied banjos are used to get around the effects that weather and moisture have on traditional skin banjos. Most banjos today have bodies made of plastic. The body of the banjo typically has an eleven- or twelve-inch rim.
